Frequently asked questions…

What is Club Volleyball at Lions?

The Lions Volleyball Club is a competitive volleyball club affiliated with Ambrose University. We compete at the Volleyball Alberta Provincial Stream level. Athletes are eligible to tryout for a position on our Lions Club teams through the tryout process in fall (starting in Oct) for ages 13U-14U. The older age brackets 15U-16U-17U-18U generally are pre-signed in September. If we run a tryout for an age bracket, there are openings for that team.

This is a competitive setting and not like community sport where everyone makes a team. At the early ages, there are a lot of beginners based on the fact that most clubs start at 12U (Grade 6) or 13U (Grade 7) and this is most athletes first opportunity to play club. At the upper age brackets, things are more competitive.

What are fees for Club Volleyball?

Club fee’s can range from $2000-$3500+ depending on the age and the travel schedule of that team. The season typically runs from December to mid-May. Teams practice on average – 3 times a week with competitions done tournament style. Club Fees cover: registrations for Volleyball Alberta, Volleyball Canada, tournament entry fees, practice gym rentals, coaches honorariums, equipment, uniforms and team gear, coaching development and Club Administration costs.

How can I find out more about the club?

Players that are new to the sport or at the very beginning stages can also search out Lions camps, clinics and training sessions. In addition, Ambrose University runs summer camps that accommodate all levels from beginner to elite camps. Watch our website for updates to all of these programs.

How are athletes selected to teams?

Selections will be made by a Technical Selection Committee.  The Technical Committee is made up of qualified and experienced Volleyball Personnel. This committee will place each athlete on the team they believe to be beneficial to the individual athlete and to the competitiveness of the team.

Athletes will be selected on individual merit in terms of athletic ability and future potential, volleyball skills, physical size/strength, work ethic, attitude, communication skills and position- specific attributes.

What are age categories and how are players placed in them?

Players will try out for their appropriate age category. If a player is invited by a Technical Committee member to try out at a higher level, he or she is free to do so.

How many teams are their in each age category?

The number of teams per age bracket will be determined by availability of gym time, availability of coaches, and the number of athletes in the individual age brackets.

What is the commitment required to be a part of a team?

After a player has committed to a team, a portion of the season fees will be required at signing.

Entire season fee for competing Volleyball AB teams will be required by December 15th. This is a non-refundable deposit for the season. If the deposit cheque is not received by December 15th, the athlete could risk losing their place on the team. Only under extraordinary circumstances such as medical issues will exceptions be made.

Teams fees are set prior to the season when we have the final Volleyball Alberta schedule with locations.

Once players have been selected, finalized and registered with Volleyball Alberta there are no refunds or reimbursements to the club fees. Meaning, if a player is unable to attend a tournament, there is no refund or reduction of fees. The fee is based on the cost of the team to run, not individual participation in events.

What can I expect as a parent of an athlete on a team?

We have information on our website that give details regarding club, its seasons, pricing and other details. If you are new to club volleyball, this is the place to have your questions answered.

Parents must REGISTER their child with Volleyball Alberta as a Tryout Player before their child can participate in the tryout process. This includes those that have registered for tryouts on-line.

Players and parents will be asked to sign a Lions Code of Conduct prior to training with the club.

It is very important to review our club mission statement and expectations regarding player and *parent* conduct. We are a zero policy club and you/your athlete will NOT be able to participate if not upholding our values and code of conduct as well as that of Volleyball AB and Volleyball Canada.

Thank for considering Lions Volleyball Club and we hope to see you in the gym!
